The file “SIZE Editor for ResEdit 2.1” contains a ResEdit 2.1 (or later) RSSC resource that adds an editor for SIZE resources to ResEdit. SIZE resources are resources of type 'SIZE' that contain information about an application’s memory requirements and other capabilities. MultiFinder and System 7 use it to learn how to interact with the program.
The typical SIZE editor window looks like this:
ResEdit comes with a template for SIZE resources, but it (as all templates do) has a somewhat clunky interface. The SIZE editor replaces the template with a relatively small modeless dialog. The dialog contains only the options that are in use by System 7 and the two Switcher options that are still occassionally used.
The dialog also includes two edit fields labeled Preferred and Minimum. The Preferred field sets how much memory the application would like to have allocated for it. The Minimum field tells the System the absolute minimum amount of memory the programs needs to run.
Normally, all SIZE resources will have an ID of -1. However, if the user changes the program’s preferred amount of memory (with Get Info in the Finder), a duplicate of the original is given an ID of 0 and all changes are saved to the duplicate.
The SIZE editor is only compatible with ResEdit versions 2.1 and later. The editor protocols for versions earlier that 2.1 are different and will not work with this editor.
The file “SIZE Editor for ResEdit 2.1” contains the SIZE editor and all its associated resources. Using ResEdit, copy ALL the resources in “SIZE Editor for ResEdit 2.1” into ResEdit or your “ResEdit Preferences” file with one exception. The SIZE editor uses a PICT ID = 11 to display the separator line. In order to allow pre-System 7 Macs to run the SIZE editor, I have included the picture in “SIZE Editor for ResEdit 2.1”. If you are using System 7, it is completely optional for you to copy it—otherwise you must. Also, several other ResEdit extensions may use the same picture so you may have to overwrite the picture if you copied it before (or you can check to see if it exists and copy it if appropriate).
The Preferences file is in your System Folder (System 6.0.x) or the Preferences folder in your System Folder (System 7.0). You can copy into the running version of ResEdit so long as you don’t replace resources in use; use common sense and make sure you have a backup copy of ResEdit. When pasting into a program with many large resources (like ResEdit), window updates may be relatively slow. Have patience!
